Holistic Massage Therapy

What is holistic massage?

Holistic massage is the use of hands to manipulate soft tissue of the body, particularly muscles.  It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole body or specific parts of it.  The use of massage has been recorded since 3000BC.  It was used for the promotion and restoration of health, relaxation, improving circulation and treating sore muscles and joints.  Today, massage can be used alone or in combination with other treatments.  It is beneficial to all body systems and is a natural and effective way to treat physical and psychological problems.

What are the benefits of massage?

The benefits of massage are:

  • By improving circulation, oxygen and nutrients are delivered more efficiently to the body and there is more efficient removal of waste products

  • Massage can lower high blood pressure by reducing tension

  • Movements used in massage remove lactic acid and toxins which build up in over-worked or over-excised muscles thus reducing muscle fatigue and stiffness.  The more efficient delivery of  nutrients and   oxygen to muscles and the faster removal of waste and carbon dioxides helps muscles to function at their optimum level

  • Massage encourages better digestion, as it speeds up the removal of waste products and increases the flow of blood to the liver

  • The movements in massage help speed up the removal of dead skin cells which improves skin tone, colour and elasticity

  • Massage is very relaxing and when relaxed the body can breathe more deeply and     efficiently.  This enables better absorption of oxygen and more efficient removal of carbon dioxide

  • Massage helps the lymphatic system remove waste and boost immunity

  • Massage is very relaxing and this reduces the effects of stress on the body

  • Massage is very relaxing and relaxation of the mind reduces tension and anxiety and its effects

  • Massage can give increased energy

  • Massage gives a lift to the emotions and can increase positive feeling

What does a massage treatment involve?

Before the massage, a client consultation will be completed.  The client will then be asked to undress, apart from underwear and lie on the massage table covered by towels.  The therapist will then re-enter the room and the massage will begin.  After the massage it is recommended that the client drinks plenty of water.  Massage encourages the removal of waste products and drinking water will help to remove these.
